Bafana Bafana to reap rewards of Kaizer Chiefs’ youth development efforts – Zwane

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Arthur Zwane has advised Bafana Bafana to succeed through the club’s efforts to develop youngsters.

  • Young Amakhosi helped South Africa repel Comoros
  • Zwane pleased with club’s development efforts
  • The Chiefs junior team has won some tournaments

WHAT HAPPENED? On Wednesday, several Amakhosi players were in action as South Africa U20 beat Comoros 4-0 to reach the semi-finals of Cosafa’s U20 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The national junior team is coached by Chiefs DDC tactician Vela Khumalo, which included eight players from the Amakhosi youth ranks.

Mduduzi Shabalala, who recently signed a first-team deal with the Soweto giants, won the man of the match award as Prince Manku and Puso Dithejane scored.

WHAT WAS SAID: “I think I said it four years ago, if I’m not mistaken, I said now is the time for the country to benefit from the Kaizer Chiefs because we don’t want to rush,” said Zwane to reporters, while by iDiski Times.

“We were very relaxed about doing what we were doing and wanted to achieve. Now we can reap the rewards.

“It also benefits the country, which is a good thing, and I’m sure you’ve seen the results of our development. The U19s have just won the Engen Champ of Champs, and a month ago they won the Engen Knockout Challenge Our U17s also won a cup, our U13s did very well, our U15s lost in the semi-final on penalties and our reserve team just won the Diski Shield.

“That alone tells you, but we don’t tell our boys ‘go ahead and win at all costs’. We focus more on our game system because the game system will make you identify [players] because it’s about identifying talent when you bring in players.

“So it’s helped us a lot when we’re doing recruitments, what kind of players we’re looking for and that’s why right now in development things are going well. Yes, there’s still a lot of work to do, but there’s a lot of improvement too, which is good. Just because of the identity – the identity gets results in the future.

THE OVERVIEW: Zwane has been a major crusader in advocating for youth player development.

Before being appointed senior team coach for the Chiefs, he managed the junior team and in 2019 he urged his fellow coaches to join him in forming a forum that would help develop South African football.

Among the current players in the Chiefs squad he has developed at junior level is midfielder Nkosingiphile Ngcobo.

WHAT IS THE FUTURE FOR ZWANE: After leading the Glamor Boys to three straight PSL victories, the coach will be hoping his side will pick up another win on Saturday against Chippa United.
