A gathering place for young Muslims in Burien was hit by a car on Monday.

Authorities call this a hit-and-run incident. No one was hurt.

Witnesses say it happened around 9:15 a.m. Monday when a silver car slammed into the prayer space inside the Muslim American Youth Foundation community center, then reversed and sped away, leaving behind it extensive damage, as well as its bumper and hubcap.

The Washington Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-WA) says it is the fifth Islamic center in Washington to be targeted in the past four months, in addition to numerous other places of worship.

“This is another disturbing act of violence at an Islamic Center in Washington State. If there were people praying inside the facility at the time of this hit-and-run, we would be talking about serious injuries,” CAIR-WA executive director Imraan Siddiqi said in a statement. “It’s a community that is a haven for many young people, and it’s heartbreaking to see their facility damaged in this way. We stand with our brothers and sisters in the MAYF community and hope that the person responsible will soon be brought to justice.

The Muslim community holds a press conference Tuesday at 9 a.m. in front of the MAYF in Burien.
