SINGAPORE – Talented players from the Lion City Sailors academy can look forward to training stints with Dutch giants Feyenoord after Premier League champions Singapore announced a three-year partnership with the club based in Rotterdam.
The tie-up will focus on youth development and education, and will see training and professional exchanges between the two teams. The sailors will also support the Feyenoord brand exhibition in Singapore.
Feyenoord have won 15 Eredivisie titles and their youth team have won the Rinus Michels award for Holland’s top academy five times since 2009. Notable graduates include former Manchester United and Arsenal striker Robin van Persie and former Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum.
Gido Vader, head of international relations at Feyenoord, said the club hopes to “contribute to the development of football in Singapore and the region” through this collaboration. He added: “In addition to allowing us to access a very interesting commercial market, this partnership also allows us to track the most talented players in the region.”
Players selected from among the young sailors will take part in two-week attachments at Feyenoord. Their Under-14 side had spent two weeks in Rotterdam during a training trip to Europe last November.
Sailors chief executive Chew Chun-Liang said the partnership underscored their drive for excellence and to become “one of the best clubs in Asia and an elite center for youth development”.
The Sailors signed a similar deal with eight-time German champions Borussia Dortmund in July last year.
