Minister for Youth Development and National Service, Foster Cummings visited the community of Morvant where he met MP (MP) for Laventille East/Morvant and Minister for the Department of Housing and Urban Development (MHUD) Adrian Leonce, to discuss and explore suitable sites for the construction of a Youth Development Center (YDC).
Minister Cummings noted that a youth development center in the Morvant community will provide technical and vocational training opportunities for young people in the area:
“Thus contributing significantly to the creation of safe spaces for young people and providing an environment conducive to the positive development of young people.”
During the visit, MP Leonce emphasized that the new YDC will serve as a center of transformation within the community and shared his enthusiasm to “partner with the Ministry of Youth Development to merge all opportunities for young people and provide a comfortable space within the community”.
The site identified at Coconut Drive Morvant, for the development of the new Youth Development Center, is adjacent to Malick High School. The Principal, Mr. Harry Jaikaran, who was also present at the visit, noted that the construction of the YDC would be “beneficial to its students and the community at large and help eliminate idleness among young people”.
Minister Cummings was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary of MYDNS – Mr. Farook Hosein, Deputy Permanent Secretary – Ms. Cherryl-Ann Solomon, Director of Youth Affairs – Mr. Sean Ramrattan, Major David Benjamin – Director of Specialized Services Programs for youth (SYSP) and other ministry officials.
Also present were Mr. Jeffrey Reyes – Director, Program Monitoring, Coordination and Evaluation Unit at MHUD, Mr. Vyas Ramphalie – Managing Director of National Insurance Property Development Company Limited (NIPDEC) and Mr. Raymond Hackett – Manager real estate development at NIPDEC.
