BRONSON — When Tonya Wilcox roamed the city this summer, she didn’t see a whole lot of activity that her child might be interested in. Wilcox decided to do something about it and started the Soaring Eagles Youth Community Center. The organization was named by Wilcox’s son.
“I’m so grateful,” Wilcox said. “I’ve had a lot of good responses from the community. The county commissioner even helped me. He said, “If you can tell me you’re a nonprofit, I’ll find you a building,” and he came. It is an excellent result.
Soaring Eagles received its IRS nonprofit status this spring and quickly got the ball rolling. The group will operate out of the former Bronson Gymnasium, located across from the Levy County Tax Collector’s Office. The building is available for use by certified nonprofit organizations across the city.
They have many volunteers lined up, including an art teacher and a music teacher who will be giving guitar lessons. Many local high school students will also be helping out from August, offering help and mentoring to younger students. The goal is to have a monthly event to bring children and families together, and to offer ongoing after-school programs and tutoring.
With a building and mostly volunteers in hand, Soaring Eagles just lacked funds. They will be hosting a free family board game night on July 15 at 6 p.m. at the Old Bronson Gym. They will have a stand selling Krispy Kreme donuts, hot chocolate and coffee. All proceeds will support the art class. Items for the booth were donated by Sam’s Club in Gainesville and an anonymous donor.
The exact timings of the Soaring Eagles remain flexible, as they are entirely dependent on the availability of their volunteers. You can follow them on Facebook, and they’re building a website.
Wilcox is very interested in hearing ideas from the community, and especially children, about the activities and educational support they would like to see at the centre.
