Suicide and the LGBTQ Youth Community

June is nationally known as Pride Month where we can celebrate and accept LGBTQ+ people and their diversity. This is also the time to raise awareness among members of the LGTBQ+ community who are committing suicide or having suicidal thoughts.

The Trevor Project is the world’s largest suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning (LGBQ) youth.

Here are the main stats of The Trevor Project

  • Suicide is the second leading cause of death among youth aged 10-24 (Hedegaard, Curtin & Warner, 2018) — and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning (LGBTQ) youth are at significantly increased risk.
  • LGBTQ youth are more than four times more likely to attempt suicide than their peers (Johns et al., 2019; Johns et al., 2020).
  • The Trevor Project estimates that more than 1.8 million LGBTQ youth (13-24) seriously consider suicide every year in the United States – and at least one attempts suicide every 45 seconds.
  • The Trevor Project 2022 National Survey of LGBTQ Youth Mental Health found that 45% of LGBTQ youth had seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year, including more than half of transgender and non-binary youth.

“An accepting adult reduces the risk of suicide by 40% for LGBTQ youth” (The Trevor Project). Acceptance by family, peers, and society can help build and support LGBTQ+ wellbeing.

This month is the perfect time to start a conversation about how we can help these people feel accepted. By educating ourselves and creating dialogue, we can help reduce these statistics in our community.

If you or someone you know is thinking about suicide, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. 1-800-273-TALK (8255). For more resources on young LGTBQ, visit or
