Rugby Australia today announced that Women’s Youth Development XV matches will begin this weekend alongside the Buildcorp Super W competition.
With matches fully funded by Rugby Australia and states investing in their respective programs, the competition opens up new opportunities for the next generation of players to represent their state and gain greater access to high quality coaching.
Teams from Queensland, NSW and the ACT will be the first to enter this year’s competition, with Rugby Australia looking to expand to all states with a Super Rugby team in the coming years.
Rugby Australia Women’s Rugby Chief Executive Jilly Collins said: “Rugby Australia is incredibly proud to be able to launch these matches, which will provide even more opportunities for young women to play at a higher level.
“The youth age group in particular is an emerging area of the women’s 15s game and has seen strong growth in recent years.
“Our investment in this area is crucial as it will help develop players from an early age. We see this as a key element on the path from high performance XVs to Buildcorp Super W and the Wallaroos Buildcorp.
Buildcorp Wallaroos Head Coach Jay Tregonning said: “A fully funded competition is the natural progression of the Women’s XV programme.
“We have seen some fantastic young athletes emerge from Buildcorp Super W competition and these matches will give our young players another layer of development and support on their journey.
“Having this extra tier on the lane will both improve the quality of rugby in all of our states and the competitiveness of Buildcorp’s Wallaroos.”
