Youth Development and Reception Center probably in Caledonia | Local News

YORKVILLE – Racine County Council has put forward plans for the Racine County Youth Care and Development Center project, which is to be a juvenile detention center.

A first reading was made at the County Council meeting on Tuesday evening for the Executive Committee’s resolution authorizing the purchase of land, located along Three Mile Road in the village of Caledonia near the International Airport of Batten, for $ 1 million and authorizing the construction of the Youth Development and Care Center on the site.

The county council does not make any decision on the items on the agenda until a second reading has been carried out. The second reading and vote on this item will take place at a future County Council meeting.

Racine County had previously proposed two locations for the $ 43 million Youth Development and Care Center. The first location was a 2 acre location in the town of Racine, on the former Brannum Lumber property on Taylor Avenue, across from the Dennis Kornwolf County Service Center. Racine’s municipal council strongly opposed this location.

The second location was near the northeast corner of Batten International Airport, 3239 N. Green Bay Road. The facility would sit on a nearly 29-acre plot with a large pond and woodland area, but this location has not been well received by neighboring residents.

The proposed mental health-focused center would replace the existing facility on the fourth floor of the Kornwolf Center and serve a maximum of 48 youth from Racine, Kenosha, Waukesha, Manitowoc and Washington counties.
