Youth Development Week | Young Bluebirds on the World Stage

Cardiff City Academy head coach Dane Facey discusses the importance of role models and the support of others after Wales’ FA World Cup 2022 squad was announced earlier this week.

With Wednesday night’s announcement that City are playing Rubin Colwill and Mark Harris would join the Wales national team at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, both blue birds have joined City’s select group of players on their way to the biggest stage in international football.

Part of the second group of Welsh players to travel to a World Cup, the pair have now set an example for those at Cardiff City’s Academy, where they spent developing their skills as children. Dane shared his joy after Wednesday’s news:

“The entire Academy staff was watching Wednesday night, hoping that Mark and Rubin would have the opportunity,” started Dane. “We are all delighted that they have been selected.

“I worked with both guys for several years at the Academy, both as their individual age group manager and phase manager, and I still speak to them regularly. I think he doesn’t there aren’t two better role models for the Academy than these two guys.

“They are a real inspiration to the players in our current program to show what hard work, consistency and belief in your own abilities can do, and the doors it can open for you.
